Cathy Cade
Cathy Cade was born on February 24, 1942, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Cade was an American photographer noted for her work in documentary photography, especially for her albums A Lesbian Photo Album: The Lives of Seven Lesbian Feminists and Woman Controlled Conception. Her work started in the 1970s, when she moved to San Francisco Bay Area in 1969 and began to document the growing lesbian community there, focusing particularly on lesbian mothers. Cade also documented women’s labor organizing, women in sports, and early gay and lesbian pride parades. Cade was a member of the Bay Area Civil Rights Veterans as well as the organization Old Lesbians Organizing for Change. She worked closely with various gay and lesbian museums and archives across the country, including OutHistory, where some of her photos are displayed. She died on November 16, 2024, in Berkeley, California. For more on Cathy Cade, read Picturing a Lesbian Feminist Household: A 2015 Interview with Cathy Cade by Stephen Vider.
