Deborah Sampson

Deborah Sampson was born in Plympton, Massachusetts, on December 17, 1760. In 1782, Sampson dressed as a man, adopted the name Robert Shirtliff, enlisted in the Continental Army, and fought against the British in the American Revolutionary War. After requiring medical treatment and being reclassified by military officials as a woman, Sampson was honorably discharged. Sampson married Benjamin Gannett in 1785, had four children, and died on April 29, 1827. You can read more about Sampson’s life here: Gender Benders, 1782-1920, by Jonathan Ned Katz.
